Brian Parton @ The Downtown Lounge
Two of us B.R.D. crew went to the Downtown Lounge last night to check out local legend and rockabilly rebel Brian Parton. Having never been to the Downtown Lounge, we did not know what to expect. The place always looked slightly menacing to me, with the giant Sailor Jerry-style black panther mural on the outside wall. When we got inside, that feeling did not exactly subside, but the joint had a good vibe. Wall-to-wall rockabilly junk and ultra-rad concert posters made the place feel like you could have a good time there. The big flat screen TV behind the bar was showing Predator, which added to experience. There were a few greaser types, somes punks in the back, and an old couple that apparently wanted to get a little drunk and dance. So, basically, a bitchin bar. And, of course, there on the stage, was the skinny, wild-eyed rocker that I first laid eyes on when I was 15. He still looks just as crazy as he did to me when I was a kid, and still jams like some kind of radio-active mutant Hank Williams.
There was only about ten people there, and the show had a nice, personal feel. Jokes back and forth between the crowd and Brian between every song, and yelled out requests were met with pleasure. We only stayed for a couple hours, but it was great time for a wednesday night. Conveniently, he is there every Wednesday night, usually starting a little after 8.
Pictures are forthcoming, and possibly a video of “Lips Like Sugar”, if my shitty camera actually got a decent recording.
