Rocking the Tulsa Weekend: July 23rd to 25th, 2010

Time to get a bit a’rockin…
The Del Toros will be rockin the Marquee Friday night for their CD release show. Check out the BRD interview with these guys. Cool dudes. Our buddies in Concussion Waltz tell us that they are recording tonight (Thursday, that is) at Armstrong Studio. Not really a show, but still good to know. The local pop-rock veterans Admiral Twin will be at the Hunt Club. A+ Setup and Taifus will be at the Soundpony. The Electric Rag Band will be kicking ass and taking what you are willing to give at the Mercury Lounge on Friday, too. Rascal Flats w/ Kelly Pickler will be at the BOk Center that night, too, so be warned…
In OKC, Chloe Day will be playing at VZDs after hanging out on the Spy tomorrow. Teenage Bottlerocket and Banner Pilot will be at the Conservatory, and Jason Ringenberg, Jason from the legendary Jason and the Scorchers, will be rocking the Blue Door.
Finally, Friday, a Tulsa movie about music, The Rock and Roll Dreams of Duncan Christopher will premier at the Mayo.
Saturday night has DJ Dilation, freshly back from the World Cup games in South Africa, at the Electric Circus. Chuck Cooley & The Demon Hammers will be slammin Shennigans with Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre, and The Savage Young and Mayola will be rockin the SoundPony. Alex & The Anders will be partying and bonging beers at the Riverwalk Amphitheater, and Assimilation will be happening at the Marquee, for all you rivet heads.
AAAAANNNNDDDD, Sunday night, at the Cains Ballroom, The New Pornographers will be kicking ass with The Dodos and Imaad Wasif, which should be a bitchin show. Or, if you prefer skinny jeans and gauged ears, Take Thy Name, Reign in the Unkown, Served, and Idefy will be just down the street at the Marquee. Or, if you’re still not happy, Wild Moccasins and Kite Flying Robots will be at the Soundpony.
ADD: GUARDANT AND THE DULL DRUMS WILL BE ROCKING THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD ON SUNDAY TOO. FREE PIZZA.
Check Curt’s List and Tasha Does Tulsa for more shows, if nothing catches your eye on here. Party on, Tulsa.
Rockin the Tulsa Weekend - 6/25-27/10

Time for some weekend, brother fuckers (sister fuckers, too. Just gotta keep you from fuckin my sister).
Looks like Arnie’s is having a 90’s party tonight, June 25th, whatever that means. Also, our local Irish boys Larkin are playing on Saturday night. That’s always a good time.
Eisley is at the Cain’s tonight, if you are interested, and the Bleu Edmondson Band is there on Sunday. Honestly know nothing about either band, but this may affect your partying at the Sound Pony or Crystal Pistol, so I’ll throw it up here.
Speaking of the ol’ Pony and Pistol, Alleycat Race and DJ Soulfingaz are at the Pony tonight, and then Dance Robots Dance is Saturday night.
Alex & The Anders at the Mercury Lounge tonight. Beer Bong guitar = Party. The Downtown Lounge has Adam Lee & The Deadhorse Sound Co., as well as our pal John Moreland on Saturday night. Shenanigans has Liquid Static playing their PJ/nighty party tonight. No doubt that will be an eyeful (of what, I am not sure.)
My friend Sean Al-Jibouri, voted best guitarist in Green County when he was like 17, is at the Chalkboard on Sunday. Guess he’s doing that every Sunday night these days. Swanky, Boo-boo!
Think that covers most of the shit goin down. Check out Curt’s List if I missed anything.
Drive By Truckers/Mayola @ Cains 6/19/10

So, it was my birthday a few weeks ago, and the other BRD dudes bought me tickets to see the DBT dudes (aren’t they just the sweetest little shits?) So, I felt strongly compelled to write this little blurb about the show, because it was so fucking radical. Drive By Truckers are consistently on my regular listening list, no matter what day, season, or mood I am in, and seeing them live does not disappoint. Patterson Hood has a voice that sounds like a mutant harmonica that has been used to smoke pot through, and I mean that as a huge compliment. Mike Cooley, the other vocalist, has a classic, deep, voice that reminds me of gravel roads and Old Crow bourbon (also a compliment). And, of course, the whole band rocks ass on all cylinders. The new album is bitchin, and the new EP that Cooley has spoken word on (“Your woman is a living thing EP”) was an awesome, hilarious prelude to the show.
Ass kicking commenced, playing much from the new album (which is bitchin, by the way), and they ended the main set with a butthole-blistering rendition of “Buttholeville”, only to come back out and play an encore that lasted another 30 or 40 minutes, all balls out country rock ‘n roll. Hell of a show. Pardon the sketchy pics, I forgot my camera, and my Blackberry was too white-collar to get a good shot.

And I didn’t even mention Mayola! These guys are from just up 412 in Stillwater, so they fall in BRD’s Juris-my-diction, and they kicked a lot of ass, as well. I was really impressed with these guys, because they held the crowd’s attention and used it wisely. Also, whatever their bassist is on, I want some, cuz that dude was goin nuts up there, like he was playing to a crowd of thousands, when there were only about 100 there. AND they were handing out free copies of their last EP, which I jammed the other day, and it was pretty radical. Thanks for kicking ass, and for the free CD, dudes! I suggest jamming with these dudes any chance you get.
